Craniosacral Certification Program: Cranio for Everybody

The Academy is excited to launch a Craniosacral Certification Program with Etienne Peirsman in 2008. Craniosacral Therapy (CST) focuses on the body's craniosacral system which is made up of the cerebrospinal fluid and fascial membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord and their connection with every structure in the body. Through gentle, non-invasive touch a practitioner releases craniosacral and fascial restrictions to improve the overall functioning of the central nervous system.

In order for the brain to help the body function optimally, it needs the maximum space possible to do it's work. CST creates more space for the brain to function, allowing physical and emotional challenges to be dealt with and resolved more easily. CST is very effective for addressing a wide range of medical conditions and emotional difficulties.

As a Master of Meditation, Etienne Peirsman has developed a unique teaching style over the past 17 years that adds a meditative depth to the methods used by the Upledger Institute and combines a practical, no-nonsense approach with the biodynamic style. His classes focus on supporting each student in connecting with their full potential and awareness, rather than on tracking what is "wrong" in the client's body. His work is a synthesis of many CS methods available and creates a fresh approach to help each student achieve the confidence and self-trust to provide a beautiful craniosacral session every time. Etiienne gives Cranio back to the Heart. We are honored to welcome him in presenting his unique Craniosacral courses at the Academy.

Craniosacral Courses

The courses in the Craniosacral Certification Program are divided into four phases. After the Basic, Follow-up, and Sphenoid classes, there are options for how you can sequence your experience in the program. Please contact the Academy for more information, and for updated schedules. To download this information with dates for upcoming classes, click here.

PHASE 1:

Basic Course
Offered twice: July 24 - 27 or August 7 - 10
Thursday, 6:00 - 10:00 PM; Friday - Sunday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
28 CE hours for Massage Therapists
26.5 PDA points for Acupuncturists
$460 Full tuition, or $410 when paid 30 days before.

The Basic Course can be taken as a stand-alone program for bodyworkers who would like an introduction to Craniosacral Therapy and may not wish to complete the full certification program, or as the first class in the Craniosacral program series. You will learn how to become silent enough to listen and feel the inner movements of a person’s body.  You will understand how to approach and interact with the Craniosacral System, and feel the specific cranial rhythm you are most comfortable with. You will study how the CS system relates to the whole body, enhance your understanding of fascial intelligence, and gain the ability to do a diaphragm-by-diaphragm release over the whole body. You will also learn basic cranial lifts and neck releasing techniques.

Each day during the training you will give and receive a practice session that covers the techniques demonstrated that day.  By the end of this class, you will be able to give a full basic cranial session.

Basic Follow-Up
August 21 - 24, Thursday, 6:00 - 10:00 PM;
Friday - Sunday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
(Pre-requisite: Basic Course)
28 CE hours for Massage Therapists
26.5 PDA points for Acupuncturists
$460 Full tuition or $410 when paid 30 days before

This class will connect you with the 3 CS-rhythms and introduce you to the brain cycle. It will present unwinding techniques and teach you how to open the heart via the meridians as well as using a thorax release. You will learn how to create still-points, direct energy, and open the “avenue of expression” in order to connect with your clients using your “original voice.”  You will give and receive a practice session each day.

PHASE 2:

Sphenoid Class
September 11 - 14, Thursday, 6:00 - 10:00 PM;
Friday - Sunday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
(Pre-requisites: Basic and Follow-up Courses)
28 CE hours for Massage Therapists
26.5 PDA points for Acupuncturists
$620 Full tuition, or $560 when paid 30 days before.

Birthing pressures on the skull fixate its base into a certain position.  The normal hardening of these bones gives each of us a skull that is locked in this ‘baby’ position. Without intervention, this position stays with us for the rest of our lives.

In this class you will learn techniques to increase the flexibility of the cranial base, allowing the brain to function in the maximum space available. You will gain the ability to release the trigeminal nerve, opening up new possibilities of intelligence for yourself and your clients. Finally, you will explore the structures that keep the dura in place, such as the ethmoid and coccyx complex.

Test #1 (2 hours)

This is a practical examination where the student demonstrates all techniques learned to date in the program.

Talking to the Heart
July 17 - 20 or Sept. 25 - 28, Thursday 6:00 - 10:00 PM;
Friday - Sunday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
(Pre-requisite: Sphenoid)
28 CE hours for Massage Therapists
26.5 PDA points for Acupuncturists
$620 Full tuition, or $560 when paid 30 days before.

In this Somato Emotional Trauma Release class, students will learn to speak with their clients using their "original voice" as well as become able to recognize the intelligence and voice of cells and organs. You will gain the ability to speak directly to the structures inside the body without the interference of the chattering mind. You will also learn techniques for exploring and releasing constrictions in your own and your client's Heart, allowing both of you to function more smoothly and express more fully.

PHASE 3:

Mouth and Ear Work
July 31 - Aug 3, Thursday 6:00 - 10:00 PM;
Friday - Sunday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
(Pre-requisite: Sphenoid)
28 CE hours for Massage Therapists
$620 Full tuition, or $560 when paid 30 days before.

This class address TMJ Dysfunction and how the sympathetic and parasympathetic Nervous Systems are interconnected with our brain and impact our general well being.

Eye Work
September 18 - 21, Thursday 6:00 - 10:00 PM;
Friday - Sunday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
(Pre-requisite: Sphenoid)
28 CE hours for Massage Therapists
$620 Full tuition, or $560 when paid 30 days before.

This class will look at function and dysfunction in the body's visual system and how our vision relates to our defense systems and ability to fully relax. You will learn how to shift the direction of the energy that comes into your brain from your eyes, giving you a new way to use your vision. We will work with the brain nuclei, 6 layers of the cortex, and the unwinding of the drag tension that the cerebellum has on the visual cortex. This is a unique class presenting new developments in cranial understanding that are not being taught anywhere else.

Talking To Our Alarm Systems
September 4 - 7, Thursday 6:00 - 10:00 PM;
Friday - Sunday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
(Pre-requisite: Talking to the Heart)
28 CE hours for Massage Therapists
$620 Full tuition, or $560 when paid 30 days before.

This Somato Emotional Release 2 class will explore the reticular alarm system and the total stress cascade response in the body. Typically when we experience stress, it is the result of the reactions in the systems which function out of the awareness of our conscious mind. In this class students learn how these responses occur, and how to take them off "automatic" and interrupt the stress cascade.

Baby Class (28 hours)
To be scheduled.

In this Somato Emotional Release 3 class students will learn about the different stages of brain growth. They will re-experience conception, womb-service, delivery, and the first months with mom. They will also learn techniques for working with to-be mothers, babies, and small children. The material represented in this class is thoroughly outlined in Etienne's book "Cranio for Babies and Small Children".

Deep Tissue Release (28 hours)
To be scheduled.

Sometimes in order to adequately work on the craniosacral system (C/S system) a body worker needs first to work deeply with the Ilio-psoas complex, other pelvic muscles, neck muscles, or the respiratory diaphragm. Students in this class will learn deep tissue techniques to release the myofascial holding patterns to gain access to the C/S system.

PHASE 4:

5 Day Advanced Residential (60 hours)
To be scheduled.

In this 5-day immersion program students will work in groups of five deepening their practical skills. Each day every student will receive a full session from the other four members of their group working on them simultaneously.

Final Test (4 hours)

This is a practical examination where the student demonstrates all techniques learned in the program.

Thesis

The student decides what area of the cranial field interests them most and writes a 30 page Thesis.

Ethics

Equine positional release

This course will enable students to work with owners and their horses to achieve lasting health, comfort and soundness by building harmonious working relationships using the tools of Equine Positional Release (EPR) and Ortho-Bionomy (O/B) principles. EPR is developed from Ortho-Bionomy specifically for use with owners and their horses.

These 4 classes are designed for the student to take each class without any prerequisites. Taken together they make a body of work focused on a holistic approach to horse care using EPR & O/B principles as its foundation.

BASIC PRACTITIONER TRAINING

Foundation: Contact & Positioning
October 12 - 18
47 CE Hours for Massage Therapists
$720 Full tuition, or $650 when paid by Sept. 26.
Ursula Hofer, LPC, LMT, Advanced Instructor
Christina Montes de Oca, BA, LMT, Advanced Instructor
An entry level module, Foundation: Contact and Positioning includes history, philosophy, principles and concepts of Ortho-Bionomy along with a comprehensive approach to physical and energetic techniques for the spine and the extremities.

In Ortho-Bionomy contact means being in a specific relationship with the client that allows the self-correcting reflexes to be accessed and engaged. Learning to recognize which positions facilitate this process is an important part of learning Ortho-Bionomy. At the Phase 5 and 6 level we learn to recognize comfortable movement or energetic contact as dimensions of comfortable positions. Whether we hold positions or move with the client physically and/or energetically, ease for both client and practitioner is an important part of the contact.

Understanding about contact and positioning continues to increase with practice over time of Ortho-Bionomy as students deepen in their ability to connect in the client-practitioner relationship
.

Classes included in this module: Essentials of Ortho-Bionomy, Phase 4 Spine and Shoulders, Phase 4 Extremities, Study Group, Phase 5 and 6.

Shiatsu, translated as “finger pressure therapy,” is an Oriental healing method in which a practitioner applies pressure with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees, feet, and more to specific points on the body. These points lie along channels of energy known as meridians. Shiatsu aims to restore energetic balance to the body, mind, and spirit.

“Ancient Taoism arose from an earth-based culture, which understood the human body as a Chi-filled landscape. Like the Earth, it is mountains, woods, plains and sea.”

Sound Healing for Bodyworkers:
Basic Training

Marjorie de Muynck, MA
Samantha Jennings, DR. TCM, R.AC

Ohm Therapeutics™ is a sound healing system featuring the use of tuning forks tuned to Ohm (Om). The Ohm (Om) vibration is a powerful catalyst for accessing our body’s innate healing ability. Ohm is an earth tone, and is universally considered sacred and healing; it is clinically shown to be a safe, effective and therapeutic sound frequency.  Because all sound intervals are contained within Ohm, and movement is provided through the use of various octaves of this tone, it is a particularly effective and therapeutic choice for bodyworkers.

This two-day training covers technique, theory, and the therapeutic application of Ohm Tuning Forks. Learn to apply sound to the body, including specific acupressure, anatomical, reflexive and spinal points. The Huatuo Jiaji spinal points will be emphasized because they are reflexive to the entire body, making this a very beneficial and versatile treatment protocol easily incorporated by all bodyworkers.

Sound Healing for Bodyworkers

Sound Healing: Sound Body Treatment

Visceral Manipulation

We are pleased to announce our new Visceral Manipulation Certification Program taught by world-renowned Osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral!

Jean-Pierre Barral is a registered physical therapist and doctor of osteopathy who serves as Director of the Department of Osteopathic Manipulation at the University of Paris School of Medicine in Paris, France. He earned his diploma in osteopathic medicine in 1974 from the European School of Osteopathy in Maidstone, England, and went on to teach spinal biomechanics at the institution from 1975-1982. He developed Visceral Manipulation based on his innovative theory that each internal organ rotates on a physiological axis.

Barral is author of the books Visceral Manipulation, Visceral Manipulation II, The Thorax, Urogenital Manipulation, Manual Thermal Diagnosis, and Osteopathic Approach to Trauma: Focus on Whiplash.

Visceral Manipulation was developed by French Osteopath, Jean-Pierre Barral. At optimal health, the relationship between the organs (viscera) and structures of the body (muscles, membranes, fasciae and bones) remains stable despite the body’s endless varieties of motion. But when one organ can’t move in harmony with its surrounding viscera due to abnormal tone, adhesions or displacement, it works against all the body’s organs and structures. This disharmony creates fixed, abnormal points of tension that the body is forced to move around. That chronic irritation, in turn, paves the way for disease and dysfunction.

Visceral Manipulation (VM) is a gentle hands-on therapy that works through the body’s visceral system (the heart, liver, intestines and other internal organs) to locate and alleviate these abnormal points of tension throughout the body.
