The New Mexico
Academy of Healing Arts is a self-contained campus landscaped
with native plants and two pinon trees, hundreds of years old,
that were rescued from scheduled destruction by the city. Our
8000 square feet include three large adobe-plastered classrooms,
a library, student lounge, offices, and a retail shop for bodyworkers.
The Academy is twenty minutes walking distance from the beautiful downtown Plaza of Santa Fe. We are located in a residential area of what was once the Camino Real, the historic trading route between Chihuahua, Mexico and New Mexico.
Pueblo peoples have dwelt in the Santa Fe area for over 1,000 years. Ancient cliff dwellings nestle amid the breathtaking high desert and mountains around Santa Fe, reminding us of just how far back some of the roots of human habitation go in this area.
As early as 1598, Spanish colonists arrived in nearby Espanola to claim territory for the Spanish Empire. Santa Fe itself, officially named "La Villa Real de Santa Fe de San Francisco de Assisi," was founded not long after, in 1610.
In more recent times, Santa Fe has become a mecca to a new kind of seeker
who finds artistic incentive in the clear air and intense light of this area.
Outstanding geographic attributes also make the Santa Fe and Taos area a skier's
paradise. The diverse history and the unique culture of Santa Fe, combined
with the pure, inspirational beauty of the land have earned it the nickname
of "the city different." Throughout
the year, the Northern New Mexico area hosts a fascinating array of events
ranging from feast days and ceremonial dances at the pueblos to the yearly
spectacle of Zozobra's ("Old Man Gloom") burning that begins the Santa Fe
Fiesta. Indian Market, Spanish Market, the Santa Fe Opera season and the
Maria Benitez Teatro Flamenco are some of the most popular local events.
Santa Fe, with just over 65,000 inhabitants, boasts five museums, four colleges,
a contemporary arts center, and is the state capital of New Mexico.
Santa Fe offers yet more to outdoor lovers. Winding mountain trails with glorious vistas offer quick getaways from city life in the form of cross-country or downhill skiing in winter, golden aspen hikes in autumn, and cool green glades to repose in during hot summer weather. The city is dotted with small parks and recreational facilities as well.
At 7,000 feet above sea level, Santa Fe's sunny climate is another one of the reasons over one million people visit annually. Average temperature in January is 24-55 degrees Fahrenheit, in July the average temperature is 63-93 degrees. Average annual rainfall is 14 inches, and average snowfall is 32 inches yearly.
