Hi
everyone, I am a Dual Polarity / massage graduate from NMAHA
2001 and
just want to share with you how my bodywork business is growing and blossoming.
I have been self employed since graduating except for the short stint working
at
NMAHA. Since JUly of 2002 I have been living on Nantucket Island and doing
bodywork as my main income. I arrived here in HIgh season when about 50,000
tourists are
here. many wanting bodywork during their vacations. I worked for an outcall
spa and for myself, advertising with my pamphlets. Now that labor day has
long passed,
the tourists are long gone and we "islanders " are only about 6,000
to 8000. It has been an amazing process of trust in my work and myself to
generate clients as those thousands of potential clients left the island
until next
summer. That's the special ebb and flow of income on Nantucket!!
Presently I have several private clients per week who receive Polarity and Cranial-
Sacral. (I did 4 of 5 weekends with Avi). fewer and fewer clients are sticking
with straight massage after they experience a mixed session with
me, since what Polarity and Cranial has to offer widens their own body awareness
and is resolving a lot of their ailments. One client I work with weekly doing
Polarity and Cranial said, "ok all of the old stuff is gone
but
we keep unearthing new pains except for this shoulder!"
I just had another 2000 pamphlets printed with increased rates. I also work at
2 spa's here and though business for everyone is slow in winter I am making ends
meet which means a lot here on Nantucket where all
prices are inflated from food, rent and daycare for my 3 1/2 year old daughter.
On Dec 31, I had 6 sessions and made over $600. $100 in tips. But I was busy
for
11 hours including travel and set up etc, not including laundry
time once I got home, at 9 PM! Almost everyone tips here since bodywork is seen
as part of the service industry, not the medical industry. I accept tips gratefully
though there are times and sessions that have a much more
therapeutic tone and clients do not leave tips. Working 11 or more hours a day
is a normal day in summer. It was intense last summer carrying my normal sized
table all over including out to the ends of the long docks. I highly
recommend light weight tables if you at all consider doing outcall work. My
business is over 50 % outcall. Remember you will earn only 50% of the fee when
working
for
someone else. It may be the way to go to be under someone's
wings at first, at least you don't usually have to do the laundry! I also have
a practice room at home now. though my hours are limited due to my family.
The most important things I have found that support and foster my practice are:
*Be at core during my work.
*advertising. I used pamphlets and have had very positive feedback from them.
I attract certain clients because of them. Clients who are interested in receiving
what I want to offer which is explained enough to give them a
real taste of how I work.
*Cell phone. Though I really don't like them. I must admit without it I would
lose a lot of clients. I call back immediately even if I have to leave a message.
Clear contact is important to let the client you are there for
them, even if your day is full and you can't see them until tomorrow...There
are
many therapists around and some do not call back. I do!!
*Be Myself. I have gone through a lot of processing about who I am as a professional
and self employed bodyworker. It was a challenge at times in the beginning especially.
I LOVE MY WORK!!!!! I hope you will too!
It is simple, I even put that on my posters with tear tabs in the beginning.
and
it worked!!!!! Believe in yourself even through the foggy days.
* KNOW YOUR WORK!!!!!! Know what you can offer and what you can't. Offer your
strengths and hone up
and polish the other areas over time. I keep my anatomy books at hand and
I reference and re-reference info. GOOD BOOKS WILL last forever.
*Keep studying. Presently, I am completing a certification in Biosonic Repatterning
with Dr. Beaulieu (Polarity) using tuning forks, toning and mantras. It is great
to deepen my Polarity understanding with this new work.
It is amazing the effects the forks have, JUST AMAZING!!!!! I have done 2 sessions
with a Physical Therapist here with chronic back issues. I start with cranial-sacral
, add deep tissue to the afflicted area, more
Cranial-sacral and end with the forks and an overtoning symphony. AND I GET PAID
FOR IT!!!!!!!!! I love it!!!!!! yippppeeeeeee!
*HAVE FUN and let your interests lead you !
Please feel free to email or write if you have any questions etc......
